The date is set for the Young Sheldon season 6 finale which is also confirmed to maintain a The Big Bang Theory tradition. CBS’ family comedy may be on another hiatus once again, but when it comes back with a new episode, it will begin setting up this year’s much-anticipated cap off. Between what’s going on with the Coopers and where it currently lands in The Big Bang Theory timeline, expect the Young Sheldon season 6 finale to be quite special.
Almost two months before the episode releases, CBS (via Parade) confirms that the Young Sheldon season 6 finale will air on Thursday, May 18. Specific plot details about the said outing are still scant at the moment, however, it is set to run longer than usual, clocking in at an hour instead of 30 minutes. This is reminiscent of CBS’ The Big Bang Theory finale which also ran for 60 minutes, with two back-to-back episodes.
Why Young Sheldon Season 6 Finale Is Longer Than Usual
While taking mini-breaks during its run is normal, Young Sheldon season 6 has gone into a hiatus three times this year. The show is expected to have a final programming disruption sometime in early April before it strings multiple episodes leading to the finale. The reasons for these breaks vary, from CBS wanting to take advantage of the sweeps ratings period and prioritizing airing NCAA’s March Madness.
Because of this broken scheduling, CBS has to make up for all the lost time by essentially airing two episodes in one night for the Young Sheldon season 6 finale, completing its typical 22-episode year. In terms of storytelling, this also works great. After a period of bliss and peace in the Cooper household, things have started to unravel for the family. For starters, Missy’s current arc, albeit worrisome, seems to rectify Young Sheldon‘s biggest mistake which is ignoring George and Mary’s only daughter.
Expect that the remainder of Young Sheldon season 6 will have more drama. Aside from Missy’s current dilemma, George and Mary’s marriage is already starting to crumble following their massive blowup at the hospital. It’s difficult to say what Sheldon’s final arc will be since his grant database project plot just ended, but at least, things are looking up for Mandy and Georgie thanks to baby Constance’s arrival.
