Warning! Spoilers ahead for the Young Sheldon season 6. Young Sheldon season 6 finale brings back the long-lost Meemaw gag from The Big Bang Theory. CBS wraps up TV’s number 1 comedy’s year with a super-sized send-off. Young Sheldon season 6 episodes 21 and 22, “A Romantic Getaway and a Germanic Meat-Based Diet” and “A Tornado, a 10-Hour Flight and a Darn Fine Ring,” focuses on Sheldon’s upcoming move to Germany for the summer with Mary. Since the show has become more of an ensemble series now, however, it also gives the rest of the Cooper family members their respective arcs, including Meemaw.
Things have been fairly stable for Meemaw in Young Sheldon season 6. Her video-store fronted make-shift casino has been thriving, allowing her to better support Mandy and Georgie. She’s had some issues throughout the year, but nothing big enough to ruin her peace. Young Sheldon season 6 finale, however, puts her through the wringer. Not only does Pastor Jeff accidentally discovers Meemaw’s illegal gambling business, but her house is also demolished after the tornado passes Medford, Texas.
Meemaw Finally Uses Sheldon’s Adorable Nickname Again In Young Sheldon
Before Meemaw’s unfortunate turn of events in the Young Sheldon season 6 finale, however, she joins the complete Cooper clan for a send-off dinner for Sheldon. During their meal, Meemaw uses her adorable nickname for the boy genius, Moonpie, for the first time in a long while. Connie is asking Sheldon about his thoughts on his upcoming trip to Germany. The moment is brief, and it’s barely even noticeable. In the grand scheme of things, it’s inconsequential, but it’s worth noting that this is the first time that she uses this nickname again in a long time.
The term was first established in The Big Bang Theory season 2, episode 17, “The Terminator Decoupling.” In it, Penny accidentally found Meemaw’s box of letters to Sheldon which included the nickname Moonpie. When asked why he is called that, Sheldon says: “She calls me Moonpie, because I am nummy-nummy and she could just eat me up.” Earlier seasons of Young Sheldon have proven this, with Meemaw regularly using the term of endearment. In recent years, however, she hasn’t used it as much anymore.
Why Sheldon’s “Moonpie” Nickname Is So Important In Young Sheldon
Connie using it again in the Young Sheldon season 6 finale is a reminder that despite his physical growth, he is still technically a child. Bringing it back at this point in the show is also brilliant, considering the criticisms about how unbearable Sheldon has become in recent years. It doesn’t help that the series has been giving the character underwhelming plot lines that make him look more immature and inconsiderate. However, between Meemaw’s Moonpie comment and Sheldon’s earnest apology to Missy after she gets mad for ratting her out, it seems like Young Sheldon season 6 is trying to salvage the character.
