Season 5 should be the last season of You, according to the show’s star, Penn Badgley. A show about a monstrous killer, You follows Joe Goldberg (Badgley) as he struggles with his urges to kill and his own sense of morality. As season 4 ended with Joe coming to terms with his nature and returning to New York City, the road seems set for season 5.

Yet season 5 could very well be the last that You has to offer. While Joe may not have died, his conscience certainly did, leaving the character with nowhere to go but down into the depths of depravity. In an interview with IndieWire, Badgley explained that he would like to see the show end next season with Joe finally facing consequences for his many crimes. Check out his quote below:

“It feels to me like we need to do another season. It feels to me like Joe needs to get what’s coming to him, and now he has further to fall because he has all this power and wealth,” Badgley said. “But of course, that’s not up to me. I don’t know where it’s going. But to me, with this concept and with this character, we always wanted to be responsible and it’s not just the kind of thing we can let keep going because it’s doing well.”

Will Joe Ever Face Justice?

Joe Goldberg Staring To The Right

If Badgley gets his way, You‘s Joe will be facing down everything he’s done from behind bars or in a grave. So far, though he has continually been haunted by those he’s killed, Joe rarely actually faces any tangible consequences. Even the season 4 ending features Joe completely dodging any repercussions.

After all, he has been given the chance to return home and continue his life unimpeded. Meanwhile, those he has stalked and killed through the years remain in their tombs. Even the innocent Rhys (Ed Speleers) is killed in You season 4, despite Joe being the one who actually committed his heinous crimes.

Of course, if the show is coming to an end, there is nothing stopping it from forcing Joe to face the music. Given that Badgley fully understands the cruelty of his character and the fact that he deserves justice, it is likely the last season of You will feature some comeuppance. What that will look like remains to be seen, especially as You heads into season 5.
