True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto has a blunt response to a frequent fan response. Pizzolatto, who is credited as writer or co-writer on every episode of the HBO crime hit to date, recently shared a photo on Instagram with True Detective season 1 stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. This prompted several comments asking for a follow-up to the critically-acclaimed first installment, with McConaughey and Harrelson reprising their respective roles as Rustin “Rust” Cohle and Martin “Marty” Hart.
In the comments to his Instagram post, Pizzolatto detailed why a True Detective season 1 follow-up isn’t happening anytime soon.
The creator, who has been tapped to co-write Marvel’s upcoming Blade movie, in addition to rebooting The Magnificent Seven, said in part: “I’m doing other things and don’t have the time or inclination at present.” His full response is below:
“I’d have to first write a story that I, the actors, and the network all loved. Loved so much it feels worth revisiting something we already did the right way. Then the actors would have to really want to do it. Then the network would have to foot the bill, which would be considerable. So that’s a lot. And it would start with me writing something on spec. Other than that, I could write a book without those constraints, but again, I’m doing other things and don’t have the time or inclination at present.”
Why It’s Still Worth Looking Forward To True Detective Season 4
Though there remains a lot of nostalgia for True Detective season 1, which was embraced by critics and audiences, True Detective season 4 sounds intriguingly promising in its own right. Set to debut this year, with two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster in the lead role, the upcoming episodes focus on a disappearance case.
With professional boxer and actor Kali Reis also starring, True Detective season 4 unfolds in Alaska, As the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace, according to the show’s synopsis, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront their own darkness to uncover the truth. Issa López, who wrote the acclaimed Mexican fantasy horror film Tigers Are Not Afraid, directs all the episodes and serves as showrunner. Oscar winner Barry Jenkins is among the producers.
Given the talent in front of and behind the camera, True Detective season 4 is worth the recommendation when it premieres on HBO. And as for McConaughey and Harrelson, they’re collaborating on a very different project as they are working on a meta-comedy series for Apple TV+, which takes inspiration from their real friendship.
