The Umbrella Academy season 4’s episode count is a big problem for the plot. The Umbrella Academy season 3 aired on Netflix in June 2022, and it was renewed for season 4 soon after. As the show has caught up to the original graphic novels, The Umbrella Academy veered in its own direction. While The Umbrella Academy graphic novels are set to continue for several more volumes, The Umbrella Academy season 4 will be the last season of the Netflix show.
The Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman revealed the first episode of season 4 will be called “The Unbearable Tragedy of Getting What You Want” and the final episode will be called “End of the Beginning.” But it turns out the episode count for The Umbrella Academy season 4 is different from the episode count for the previous seasons. The Umbrella Academy season 1, 2, and 3 all had ten episodes, but The Umbrella Academy season 4 will only have six.
The Umbrella Academy Season 4 Episode Count Is WAY Too Short
This episode count is dangerously short given that the final season will need to wrap up all the loose ends remaining in The Umbrella Academy. The previous seasons already had trouble fitting enough information into ten episodes, and thus it will be even more difficult to make a good final season with only six episodes. The main characters have the immediate problem of Reginald Hargreeves’ universe reset to deal with, but there are many more questions that need answering.
For example, The Umbrella Academy season 3 planted several hints about the original death of Ben Hargreeves and how it connects to the Sparrow version of Ben. This event will need to finally be addressed in The Umbrella Academy season 4. The Umbrella Academy season 3 also revealed that it was Five who established the Commission, raising plenty of questions about how the Comission exists. Similarly, Reginald’s late wife Abigail is back, and the audience knows he’s an alien, but his children don’t — yet. All of these threads ideally need a payoff for The Umbrella Academy season 4 to feel like a proper sendoff for the series.
The Umbrella Academy’s Short Final Season Could Mean A Disappointing Ending
With such a short season and so many plots to wrap up, The Umbrella Academy season 4 could have a disappointing finale. If audiences are left with more questions than answers, they won’t be happy. Plus, the characters still deserve their own happy endings. The Umbrella Academy season 4 has the daunting job of solving all the show’s mysteries, while still being engaging and leaving time to explain what happens to the characters after the main events wrap up. Hopefully, Steve Blackman and his team have crafted an ending worthy of The Umbrella Academy so far.
