Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for The Power season 1.
Prime Video’s original sci-fi series The Power featured notable names like Toni Collette and John Leguizamo in its first season, but will there be a season 2? Based on the novel of the same name by English writer Naomi Alderman, The Power concerns an alternate Earth where every teenage girl suddenly develops superhero-like electrical powers. Besides its typical comic book premise, The Power touches brilliantly on issues like gender, power structures, and societal norms, and it did so in a compelling and exhilarating manner that reflected the energy of Alderman’s novel. Despite a nine-episode first season, it was clear that the story had more to offer.
Joining an ever-growing list of hit originals for Prime Video, The Power joins the ranks of other Prime Video standouts like Fleabag and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which put female creators at the forefront of modern TV. Besides the star-studded cast of The Power, the show’s storytelling was its strongest aspect throughout the first season and everything was built in a way that could ensure future seasons. With more of Alderman’s novel to pull from, The Power season 2 could be even bigger and better than its predecessor.
The Power Season 2 Is Not Confirmed
Amazon has not released any information regarding the future of The Power, and season 2 of the series is neither confirmed nor denied. With the first season’s final episode having dropped on May 12th, 2023, it is unlikely that Amazon will make any kind of major announcement until the series has had a chance to reach its full potential with all episodes available to stream. Early reviews for the series have been mostly positive, and there’s a good chance that word of mouth will only serve to make The Power season 1 all the more popular, which could instigate a season 2 from Amazon.
Regardless of its confirmation status, many of the show’s stars are quite proud of the work that they put into the first season, and that could help to push a season 2 into production. According to Digital Spy, the show’s two biggest names, Collette and Leguizamo, both expressed high interest in continuing The Power, and that could be the shot in the arm that the production needs to get rolling. Collette was quoted as saying, “it’s the subject matter…I think there are so many ways of exploring it“, which shows the actor’s investment in The Power and what it’s trying to say.
The Power Season 2 Release Date
The Power season 1’s ending was not the end of the story, and if the show is greenlit for season 2, it most likely wouldn’t take as long as its predecessor. The Power season 1 actually began production in early 2020, but a series of casting changes and the COVID-19 pandemic put things on hold (via Deadline). Fortunately, with the cast locked in and the production untroubled by unforeseen global events, The Power season 2 could release much faster than season 1. If the show is renewed, season 2 could arrive as early as the end of 2024, but it would most likely be the first quarter of 2025.
The Power Season 2 Cast
For season 2 of The Power to work, all the show’s main cast would need to return to their roles because the series contains so many disparate threads that have yet to be resolved. With stars like Collette and Leguizamo expressing interest in returning, it is more than likely that they would reprise their roles as Margot and Dr. Lopez respectively. Similarly, cast members like Auli’i Cravalho as Jos Cleary-Lopez, Toheeb Jimoh as Tunde, Halle Bush as Allie/Eve, and Zrinka Cvitešić as Tatiana Moskalev could all return among a host of other members of the ensemble.
Actors like Alexandru Bindea could still return as Viktor Moskalev in some way or another, but it is highly unlikely since his shocking death in season 1. As the factions continue to grow at the end of the first season, it also opens the door for new characters and cast members to join the ensemble, and if The Power season 2 has more plot threads, it will most likely also see the cast swell in size.
The Power Season 2 Story Details
When The Power season 1 ended, the series had only covered a portion of Alderman’s book, which left a lot unsaid. Season 2 of The Power will most likely follow up on the fallout of Margot’s disastrous debate with Daniel Dandon and explore the consequences of her actions for herself and for those who can wield EOD. Other threads like Tatiana’s destruction of the Moldovan military will pay off in future seasons, and Roxy running away to join Alice/Eve was just the beginning for the character. What happens in The Power season 2 all depends on how closely the show’s creators want to stick to Alderman’s novel.
