Summary

  • AI-generated art imagines alternative endings for Harry Potter characters like Harry, Ron, Hermione, Snape, and more.
  • The art imagines a Harry and Hermione romance, which author J.K. Rowling herself has said she should’ve done in hindsight.
  • While alternate romantic pairings may have been just as effective, others aspects, like Snape’s death, should remain untouched due to their significance in the story.

Harry Potter characters like Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Snape get their endings rewritten in a new batch of AI-generated art. Based on the novels by author J.K. Rowling, the first Harry Potter movie was released in 2001. The first film would be followed by seven successful sequels, with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part Two serving as a sendoff for the franchise’s beloved main characters in 2011.

Now, a new batch of AI art shared by Harry Potter Memes on Instagram imagines very different endings for a number of critical characters.

The art includes several major deviations from Rowling’s source material, including Harry ending up with Hermione, Ron ending up with Luna, Snape surviving, Sirius Black forgiving Regulus, Remus Lupin raising Harry, Hedwig surviving, Astoria not inheriting a blood curse, and Fred Weasley surviving the Battle of Hogwarts.

Did Harry Potter Give Everyone The Right Ending?

Harry Potter, Hermione and Ron in Deathly Hallows Ending.

Generally speaking, the endings to Harry Potter, both the books and the films, have been quite well received. That being said, it’s still interesting to imagine whether alternate endings for individual characters would have been more satisfying. The romantic elements of the story, in particular, have been questioned in the years following Harry Potter and the Dealthy Hallows – Part 2, including by Rowling herself.

The story ends with Harry ending up with Ginny Weasley, Ron’s younger sister, and Ron and Hermione ending up together. In a 2014 interview with Emma Watson, however, Rowling revealed that if she had the chance to do things over again she would have Harry end up with Hermione instead. Watson seems to be open to the idea as well, expressing that there are likely some audiences out there who may have questioned whether Ron is actually suitable as a long-term partner for Hermione.

While it’s certainly possible that a change in the romantic entanglements of Harry, Ron, and Hermione would’ve worked out just as well as or better than the ending audiences got, other aspects, like Snape’s death, should arguably remain untouched. Snape starts out as an antagonist of sorts but is eventually revealed to be one of the most important characters in the Harry Potter story. His death is certainly tragic, but it’s also very powerful, and it’s part of what makes the larger journey so moving.
