After the success of the original film, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett address whether Ready or Not 2 could be getting the green light. Released in 2019, Ready or Not stars Samara Weaving as Grace, a bride whose wedding night takes a dark turn when she is forced to participate in a deadly ritual in which her Satan-worshipping in-laws attempt to hunt and kill her. The darkly comedic horror film was made for only $6 million and would go on to earn over $57 million at the box office.
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com ahead of the release of their upcoming movie, Scream 6, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillettt provide a promising update on the status of Ready or Not 2. While the movie is far from a sure thing just yet, the two directors do seem intent on eventually returning for a sequel. Check out Bettinelli-Olpin’s comment below when asked if the duo would be interested in returning for a follow-up movie:
“That is the hope. We would love to.”
Could The Scream Franchise Affect Ready Or Not 2?
After the success of Ready or Not, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett turned their attention to a major horror franchise. The duo released Scream last year, a legacy sequel that would ultimately early mostly positive reviews and perform well at the box office. Most early reviews would suggest that the duo has nailed it once again with Scream 6, and box office projections predict that the sequel could have a franchise-best opening weekend.
The duo has already expressed interest in returning for a prospective Scream 7, meaning it’s unclear when they would even have time for Ready or Not 2 anytime soon. The sixth film in the hit horror franchise is hitting theaters only about a year after the previous movie, meaning Paramount could be keen on getting a seventh film out in a similar time frame. With such a quick turnaround, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett likely wouldn’t be able to do a Ready or Not sequel before tackling Scream 7.
That being said, it’s certainly possible that Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett will opt to do Ready or Not 2 instead of a seventh Ghostface movie, handing the reins to a new director. Both sequels are fairly up in the air at the moment, but it’s not unreasonable to suggest that the directing duo will want a break from the Scream franchise to return to one of their original creations. Although the movie isn’t yet a guarantee, Bettinelli-Olpin’s latest comment would suggest that Ready or Not 2 happening could be more a matter of “when” and not “if”.
