Six months since he made the claim, Patton Oswalt clarifies his confusing comments about Eternals 2 being in development. Chloé Zhao’s 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster introduced a whole new team of superheroes to the franchise. But while Eternals ended on a cliffhanger that clearly set up a sequel, Marvel Studios remains mum about a follow-up film, which makes Pip the Troll actor Oswalt’s past comment about it confusing.
In August 2022, Oswalt gave an Eternals 2 update, saying the sequel had been announced and Zhao was going to direct it. Since then, Marvel Studios has yet to comment on the matter, despite having several opportunities to finally announce the project. This has cast doubt on the actor’s previous quote, and now, Oswalt walks back his comment in a new interview with Empire, saying he actually doesn’t know anything about it. If there is going to be a sequel, I’ll be the last to know. I was catfished by the internet.
Will Eternals 2 Happen?
Oswalt’s explanation for his inaccurate Eternals 2 update was actually first revealed by co-star Kumail Nanjiani, who plays Kingo in the MCU. In November 2022, the actor said Oswalt was the victim of a hoax website, claiming the sequel to the 2021 Marvel Studios movie was already moving forward. Aside from Nanjiani, however, no one else from the cast has commented on the matter.
While Eternals 2‘s fate is still uncertain, Marvel Studios producer Nate Moore has confirmed the Eternals will indeed return to the MCU. Unfortunately, he didn’t get into specifics about how and when. It did seem like he was very careful to not give the impression he was confirming Eternals 2 is happening though. While the sequel is definitely the easiest way to bring back the cosmic heroes, there are other projects in which they can be included so Marvel Studios can move their story forward.
For now, it’s best to wait for an official Marvel Studios announcement about Eternals 2. Based on MCU’s confirmed Multiverse Saga slate, it may not be happening until after Avengers: Secret Wars, which is set to premiere in 2026. However, it’s safe to say the cosmic beings will re-appear in the franchise before that, especially with the looming threat brought by Kang the Conqueror becoming clearer.
