Raylan Givens takes his hat to Detroit in the first Justified: City Primeval trailer. Aired on FX from 2010 to 2015 and based on Elmore Leonard’s novels, Justified follows Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens, a tough deputy U.S. Marshal who enforces an Old West-style brand of justice in modern-day Harlan County, Kentucky. In January 2022, FX announced that Justified would receive a limited sequel series subtitled City Primeval with Olyphant reprising his role as Raylan as he is relocated to a different setting.
Today, FX Networks unveiled the first Justified: City Primeval trailer. Check it out below:
The teaser trailer for the Justified revival provides the first full look at Raylan in the Motor City while also announcing the Justified: City Primeval release date is July 18 on FX.
What To Expect From Justified: City Primeval
According to the Justified: City Primeval synopsis, the sequel series begins with Raylan living in Miami as he balances his work life with being a part-time father of his 15-year-old daughter Willa (played by Vivian Olyphant). After a chance encounter on a desolate highway, Raylan is sent to Detroit. As revealed by the teaser, Raylan takes his signature cowboy hat and boots to the Motor City, literally dusting off the old headpiece as he returns to action. Raylan’s hair is also grayer, indicating he is much older and wiser, but also nearing the end of his law enforcement career.
In Detroit, Raylan crosses paths with Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook), a violent sociopathic desperado known as the “The Oklahoma Wildman.” In the process, Raylan must also contend with Mansell’s formidable defense attorney Carolyn Wilder (Aunjanue Ellis). The story is loosely based on Leonard’s 1980 novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit, which doesn’t feature Raylan as the main protagonist, so it’s unclear what’s in store for him in the Justified sequel series. If one thing is certain, Raylan will be a fish out of water when the Marshal moves to the Motor City this summer in Justified: City Primeval.
