Speaking to animals in Baldur’s Gate 3 can be a great way to learn additional information about the world of the Forgotten Realms. Often creatures comment on the weather or their surroundings, but they may also offer vital information for a quest. Sometimes this can be unique knowledge that cannot be heard anywhere else. While not entirely necessary, the ability to speak with animals adds a fun mechanic to a player’s journey.

There are many options for players to communicate with animals in the game. The primary way is by casting the ‘Speak With Animals’ spell. This is a first-level spell of the Divination school and lasts until players take a Long Rest in Baldur’s Gate 3. ‘Speak With Animals’ cannot be used on others, so party members will need to find another way to communicate with creatures.

How To Speak With Animals In Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3 Squirrel

The ‘Speak With Animals’ spell is readily available to many of the classes in Baldur’s Gate 3. This includes Bard, Druid, Ranger, Wildheart (Barbarian), Oath of the Ancients (Paladin), and Nature Domain (Cleric).

Each of these has access to the spell, but all classes can drink a Potion of Animal Speaking. This consumable item gives the effect of the spell until a Long Rest is taken. Merchants throughout the game may randomly sell Potions of Animal Speaking, but this is always available in Volo’s stock.

Unique Ways To Speak With Animals

Warlocks can also cast ‘Speak With Animals’ but they must take the Beast Speech Eldritch Invocation. This will allow them to use the spell without expending a spell slot. Additionally, players who start with the Gnome Race and choose the Forest Gnome Subrace in Baldur’s Gate 3 have the ability to speak with animals at level one.

Players are not required to speak with animals to get through Baldur’s Gate 3, but the ability is great for finding out new information or simply role-playing. Fans of Dungeons & Dragons, especially Druids, will be familiar with the concept of speaking with animals. Players may want to speak to animals around Druid’s Grove, most notably the squirrels, the sleeping bear, and the cows for rewards.

These are some early notable creatures, but many more can be found in the Forgotten Realms. Players have multiple options in Baldlur’s Gate 3 for speaking with animals and should use this ability often to find secrets or unique interactions.
