The best potions are brewed in Hogwarts Legacy to give players certain advantages during combat, ranging from increased spell damage to health restoration. Crafted at a Potion Station in the Room of Requirement, players need to have certain potion recipes in order to make them. Although there are only seven types of potions available, players should prioritize specific recipes over others as they provide greater advantages.

Two potions that players may not wish to focus on are the Invisibility Potion and Felix Felicis, the latter of the two only being an option to those who pre-ordered Hogwarts Legacy on the PlayStation 5. The reason why these potions aren’t as useful is that two spells fulfill the same function for far fewer resources and no ingredients. The Disillusionment Charm grants Invisibility to the player for a shorter time than the potion, but players have to spend a bunch of galleons at shops in Hogwarts Legacy‘s Hogsmeade on recipe parts for something they can easily accomplish with their magic alone.

Restore Health With The Wiggenweld Potion

Players that attend their first Potions Class in the main story learn how to make a Wiggenweld Potion, a restoration brew that gives back health when used in battle. A consistent tool in any dangerous situation, players will no doubt want many variations of this potion in their inventory when exploring areas with lots of enemies like the Forbidden Forest. One of the few potion recipes given for free to the player early in the game, only two ingredients are necessary to make a Wiggenweld Potion in Hogwarts Legacy, a Dittany Leaf and a vial of Horklump Juice.

Players can hold 25 potions of each type in their inventory.

It may be wise to also buy this potion in bulk from J. Pippin’s Potions in Hogsmeade, which has bundles of the brew for 100 Galleons each. The mentioned ingredients also sell for a relatively low price, making this potion useful and plentiful for players who find themselves in battle often. Simply pressing down on a controller’s D-Pad for Xbox and PlayStation players or the G key bind for those on PC restores a character’s health when in a fight.

Increase Defense Through the Endurus Potion

Hogwarts Legacy Potion Station Making Endurus Potion to Increase Player Defense During Combat

The Endurus Potion gives players better defense to deal with dark magic, as the later quests of Hogwarts Legacy have higher-level enemies to contend with. Consuming this elixir creates a rocky exterior on a character for a limited duration, making them take reduced damage from all manner of attacks.

Players can use the Endurus Potion for protection, giving them an opportunity to use better attack combos against their enemies.

Unfortunately, players have to brew this potion themselves in the Room of Requirement rather than receiving it from a main quest. The ingredients for the Endurus Potion, Ashwinder Eggs, and Mongrel Fur are a bit difficult to find, as the former only spawns in limited nests in the open world. The essential parts of this potion are fairly rare, but the powerful effect gives players plenty of incentive to hunt down these ingredients in Hogwarts Legacy before embarking on a dangerous mission.

Buff Every Spell With Maxima & Focus Potions

Hogwarts Legacy student casts a spell with their wand, sending a red beam and sparks flying.

Both the Maxima Potion and Focus Potion give players bolstered magic when casting any kind of spell once their recipes are bought from J. Pippin’s Potions for around 800 Galleons each. Using a Leech Juice and Spider Fang to craft, the Maxima Potion increases spell damage for a short time, giving boosts to offensive magic such as Confringo or Incendio. Certain spell combos have a higher potential to defeat boss enemies in a shorter amount of time when players consume a Maxima Potion at the right time, especially since the potion also affects special attacks from the Ancient Magic meter in Hogwarts Legacy.

Players can also reduce cooldowns for stronger spells such as Avada Kedavra and other Unforgivable Curses.

As a result, this potion requires more ingredients to craft, including Lacewing Flies, Dugbog Tongue, and Fluxweed Stem. Fluxweed Stem, in particular, can be tricky to obtain as a plant that demands a certain Table schematic with the right pot to grow in from the Tomes and Scrolls shop for the Room of Requirement.

Constantly Damage Enemies Through the Thunderbrew Potion

Debatably the strongest potion in the game, the Thunderbrew Potion in Hogwarts Legacy creates a massive storm around the drinker that stuns and damages nearby enemies within a radius. This recipe is very expensive to get, costing players a whopping 1,200 Galleons at J. Pippin’s Potion shop. Much like the Fluxweed Stem for the Focus Potion, Thunderbrew demands Shrivelfig Fruit as one of its ingredients that players can either buy from shops in Hogsmeade or grow on their own.

The other two ingredients needed to make Thunderbrew are a Leech Juice and the Stench of the Dead, the former being found in the open world close to large bodies of water. Some of the strongest enemies in the game, Inferius monsters, occasionally drop Stench of the Dead when defeated, making Thunderbrew a reward of sorts for challenging this type of foe. Wandering around the graveyards of the Highlands in Hogwarts Legacy, Inferi usually appears at night for players looking to get the tools to craft a high number of Thunderbrew Potions.
