Heartstopper season 1 debuted at #7 in Netflix’s global top 10 on its release weekend, so it’s no surprise Heartstopper season 2 is on the way. The coming-of-age drama centers on 10th grader Charlie Spring (Joe Locke), his friends at Truham Grammar School, and his crush-turned-boyfriend Nick Nelson (Kit Connor). Heartstopper season 1garnered an impressive 14,550,000 viewing hours during its first week, and Heartstopper season 2 is set to deliver another chapter in the breakout LGBTQ comedy-drama.
Heartstopper season 1 found Charlie being assigned a new homeroom deskmate, Nick, towards whom he started to develop romantic feelings. Heartstopper also explored Nick’s soul-searching — and he eventually comes out to his mother, Sarah (Olivia Coleman), in the Heartstopper season 1 finale. Netflix’s Heartstopper is based on Alice Oseman’s webcomic-turned-graphic-novel series, but while Heartstopper season 1 followed the first two volumes of the Heartstopper graphic novels, its central characters also appear in other works by Oseman, making the pool of possible storylines for Heartsopper season 2, season 3, and beyond. Here’s the latest Heartstopper season 2 news, including the cast, release date, story, and trailer.
The Latest Heartstopper Season 2 News
The latest Heartstopper season 2 news comes from executive producer and webcomic creator Alice Oseman, who has revealed exactly where Heartstopper season 2 is in the production process. Speaking at the BFI Future Film Festival (via RadioTimes), Oseman stated that Heartstopper season 2 is in the editing stages — “So, we’re kind of still in the editing process for season 2. Very exciting getting to see the episodes come together. Yeah, just really happy with how it’s looking,”.
Production on the next installment ended in December 2022, as confirmed by an Instagram post from Netflix UK. Filming of the latest season had a surprisingly quick turnaround, as season 2 filming only began in late September of the same year. Now that Heartstopper season 2 is in the editing stages, it’s likely that a release date could be on the horizon sometime soon.
Heartstopper Season 2 Is Confirmed
Netflix confirmed the renewal of Heartstopper season 2 on May 20, 2022, in addition to season 3. The Heartstopper season 2 news was shared on various social networks by Netflix and Heartstopper’s creator, Alice Oseman. Oseman will return as a writer for both seasons 2 and season 3, and it’s expected that series director Euros Lyn and executive producer Patrick Walters will also return in their respective capacities.
Heartstopper Season 2 Predicted Release Date
Unfortunately, the latest Heartstopper season 2 news hasn’t included a release date. Filming for season 1 started in April 2021 and took three months to shoot in the UK, but the series was not released on Netflix until April 2022, so an exact timetable is difficult to establish. Production for the second installment began in September 2022 and wrapped in December. Therefore, if Heartstopper season 2 were to follow the same timetable, then it’s likely that the new season would premiere on Netflix in the fall of 2023.
Heartstopper Season 2 Cast
Some reassuring Heartstopper season 2 news is that the season 1 cast will be returning for season 2. Charlie’s friends will surely come back, including Doctor Who newcomer Yasmin Finney, who will return as Elle. Similarly, William Gao and Tobie Donovan will return as Tao and Isaac, respectively, and Corinna Brown and Kizzy Edgell will likely return as Tara and Darcy, Elle’s new friends, with whom Nick bonded in Heartstopper season 1, episode 6. Olivia Colman will undoubtedly return as Nick’s mom Sarah, and Heartstopper season 2 couldn’t be back without Joe Locke and Kit Connor as Charlie and Nick. Actor Bradley Riches has been upgraded from a background student character to play Truman student James McEwan.
Heartstopper season 2 news reported by DigitalSpy revealed there was an open casting call for “a non-binary or female plus-sized actor of British South Asian heritage.” This was for the role of a year 11 student named Sahar Zahid, who will be played by industry newcomer Leila Khan. Heartstopper season 2 will also introduce Nick Nelson’s older brother David, who will be portrayed by Jack Barton. Nick’s father Stephane will also play a role in season 2, and will be played by Thibault de Montalembert (All Quiet on the Western Front). Nima Taleghani has been cast as a Truman teacher named Mr. Farouk. Finally, Netflix announced that Bel Priestly and Ash Self will be joining the Heartstopper season 2 cast as Elle’s friends Naomi and Felix, respectively.
Heartstopper Season 2 Story
As Heartstopper season 1 ended with Charlie and Nick happily spending their summer together as boyfriends, and with Nick coming out to his mother, Sarah, it’s highly likely that their relationship will take center stage in Heartstopper season 2. Heartstopper season 1, episode 8 also hinted at possible unspoken feelings between Tao (William Gao) and Elle (Yasmin Finney), therefore, their friendship — that could possibly be something more — could be explored.
Charlie’s secret ex Ben (Sebastian Croft) has also been lurking, and will likely continue to cause him and Nick problems they’ll have to deal with after going public with their relationship in the Heartstopper season 1 ending. Other Heartstopper season 2 news has shown that the school will be taking a class trip to Paris, based on Oseman’s comic and some set photos (via Pride.com). It’s also been teased that Charlie will have a lot to deal with when it comes to his mental health this upcoming season.
