Members of the Duggar family are returning to TV in Amazon Prime’s newest show, Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets. The Duggars have not been on their own show since the end of Counting On aired in 2020. Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets promises to delve into the Duggar family and how the family members were brought up, the influence of their religious background, and behind-the-scenes facts about how the previous shows were filmed.
The Duggars became famous due to their large family and strict religious beliefs. They followed the guidelines set by Bill Gothard and his Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP) and were featured in the show, 19 Kids & Counting, because of their unusual lifestyle. The show was canceled following Josh Duggar’s sexual abuse scandal, and their other spin-off, Counting On, was canceled after Josh’s arrest and conviction on possession of illicit images of children. The many scandals and secrets revealed the Duggars were not the pure, wholesome people they presented themselves to be, and the backlash was considerable. Since then, several of the oldest children have been speaking out on their experiences.
What Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets Is All About
Shiny Happy People promises an in-depth look into how IBLP functioned and impacted the children who grew up with its teachings. Its primary focus will be on the Duggar family because of their prominent and public history with Bill Gothard’s teachings. Us Weekly reports that the docu-series hopes to show how the Duggars’ controversial beliefs led them from being one of the most beloved TV families to one of the most infamous. According to Amazon Studios, the series will show the Duggar children as well as friends and former IBLP members “bravely come forward and reveal the abusive practices that kept them in a living nightmare.”
Who’s Appearing in Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets
As seen in the trailer above, Jill Dillard (née Duggar) and her husband Derick Dillard are participating in the Amazon show. The couple is seen talking with producers, while Jill talks about wanting to tell her story. Briefly seen in the trailer is Amy Duggar, Jill’s cousin. Both Amy, Jill, and Derick are estranged from the Duggar family, and have spoken out on Josh’s conviction and sentencing. Others shown in the trailer are former IBLP members, many who are unidentified. However, it is likely that some of these stars knew the Duggars through IBLP or grew up in a family like them, and are sharing their stories like Jill.
When Will Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets Premiere?
Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets is set to premiere on June 2, 2023, exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. It will be a four part documentary series showing the truth about the Duggar family and their involvement with Bill Gothard’s Institute in Basic Life Principles. All four episodes will be released on the same day. Long-time followers of the Duggar family and all their scandals will not want to miss hearing from Jill, Amy, and others firsthand on what they went through.
