Deadpool 3 could actually improve Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine when taking comments from Ryan Reynolds into account. Since appearing in 2000’s X-Men, Hugh Jackman has been widely considered one of the best comic book castings in superhero cinema history. This was only furthered by Jackman’s continued roles as the character over the next two decades and solidified by his fantastic performance in 2017’s Logan.
However, despite Jackman’s brilliant repeated performances as the character, there have been some drawbacks in terms of how Logan/Wolverine was written. From the movie version of Wolverine being much less rage-filled than the Wolverine of the comics to the lack of other Marvel super-teams Logan was a part of and an absence of a comic-inspired costume, Jackman’s version of the character had some differences to the comics. As a result, Deadpool 3 can go to improve Wolverine on the big screen despite Jackman’s brilliant performances over the years.
Deadpool 3 Could Have A More Comic-Book-Accurate Version Of Wolverine
This improvement could come by making Wolverine more comic-book accurate in Deadpool 3 than he was in the X-Men movies. This is backed up by comments from Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool 3‘s lead actor, about Hugh Jackman’s return as the iconic Marvel hero. In an interview with ET Canada, Reynolds explained that the team behind Deadpool 3 pitched a very different version of Jackman to the one he has grown accustomed to playing.
Reynolds also commented that this divergence from the X-Men version of Wolverine made Jackman extremely excited to return to the role despite the character’s fantastic ending in Logan. This could very well hint at a version of Wolverine that is more comic-accurate. From the more rage-induced version of the character to a potential iconic yellow Wolverine costume for Hugh Jackman, Deadpool 3 could fix the main issue that Jackman’s incredible performance papered over from the X-Men franchise.
Another interesting note that can be gleaned from Reynolds’ comments about Deadpool 3 is that they support to rumors of the TVA’s inclusion in the film. In the run-up to filming beginning for Deadpool 3, many rumors about the film’s script have centered on the return of Owen Wilson’s Agent Mobius and the return of the TVA, who will be tracking down Reynolds’ Deadpool. With Reynolds’ comments citing a “divergence from the character that he [Jackman] knows and the character that he’s left behind”, the TVA’s inclusion becomes more likely.
This stems from the idea that the TVA houses multiple variants from across the Marvel multiverse. Similarly, both Reynolds and Jackman have stated that Deadpool 3 will not tarnish Logan‘s finality. Due to this – alongside Reynolds’ comments – the version of Wolverine seen in Deadpool 3 could be one from the MCU multiverse that is different from the X-Men version. This could then lead to a more comic-accurate version of the character, making Wolverine’s inclusion in Deadpool 3 an upgrade on Jackman’s previous iterations.
