- Beetlejuice 2 will explore the theme of family and the intricacies of keeping a family together in a crazy and unpredictable world.
- The sequel will introduce new family members and potentially say farewell to others, with the personal stories of the Deetz family continuing.
- The movie will expand on the afterlife and feature a funeral attended by key characters, adding to the potential challenges faced by the Deetz family.
Beetlejuice 2 cinematographer Haris Zambarloukos teases the story details and theme of the Tim Burton sequel, which will continue the tale of the 1988 horror comedy. The original movie told the story of a recently deceased couple’s struggles with a new family moving into their former home and their dealings with a shady, loud, and over-the-top bio-exorcist. Both Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton are confirmed to reprise their roles of Lydia Deetz and the titular bio-exorcist himself, while Catherine O’Hara will return as Lydia’s stepmother Delia Deetz.
Via The Wrap, Zambarloukos revealed the themes that play a key role in the Beetlejuice 2 sequel. Though the movie’s filming has been suspended since SAG-AFTRA has gone on strike alongside the WGA, the cinematographer stated that the family theme drives Burton’s sequel, specifically what keeps a family closely tied together and united even amidst an ever-changing, unpredictable world. Check out Zambarloukos’ full explanation below:
“At its heart ‘Beetlejuice ’ is a story about a family. And now it’s 30 years later and what are the intricacies and the human condition in keeping a family together all that time set in the craziest world possible? That’s why I choose projects. That human connection for me is always at the forefront.”
Beetlejuice 2 Will Introduce New Family Members & Potentially Say Farewell To Others
While official details for Beetlejuice 2 are still unknown, some clues could hint at how the sequel will continue the character’s journey since the original movie. Early Beetlejuice 2 set photos have seemingly revealed that the sequel will again occur in the Maitland and Deetz’s hometown of Winter River, Connecticut, 30 years after the original movie’s events. It will also expand on the afterlife, as Willem Defoe is set to portray an undead lawman ensuring order among the dead, while Justin Theroux has been cast in an undisclosed role.
Beetlejuice 2 will continue the personal stories of the Deetz family, with Jenna Ortega cast as Lydia’s daughter. Furthermore, Beetlejuice has seemingly found love and married a character played by Monica Belucci. With one of the protagonists and the main antagonist having moved on and found their own families, the next entry will likely explore how these returning faces will handle these new responsibilities. However, much more dire circumstances could potentially change and test the Deetz family, as further set photos have revealed that Beetlejuice 2 will feature a funeral attended by many key characters.
Regardless of what Beetlejuice 2 may hold for its new and returning faces, the sequel’s family theme raises some intrigue. While the original movie saw the Deetz family come together with the Maitlands to vanquish Beetlejuice and, in turn, become an unconventional family in the end, the extent of this new status quo was not seen in detail. As such, between new family members and potentially life-changing experiences, the sequel won’t just retread the original and will stand out by tackling this theme.
