Disney has officially released the teaser for Michelle Yeoh’s American Born Chinese. The Oscar-nominated actor recently made herself an international name as Evelyn Wang in Everything Everywhere All At Once. As the heavy favorite to win Best Actress at the Academy Awards, she has become an instant star and is more than ready to contribute to her own Disney+ show.
Now, shortly before the Academy Awards, after months of anticipation, Disney has finally released the American Born Chinese trailer on YouTube. Check out the video below:
A show comparing superheroes to Chinese mythology, the teaser for American Born Chinese features Jin Wang (Ben Wang) discovering supernatural abilities as the gate to Heaven is beginning to open.
Everything We Know About American Born Chinese
With Chinese projects becoming more popular in Hollywood, American Born Chinese offers some additional representation for Chinese Americans. Alongside Yeoh and Wang are actors Yeo Yann Yann (Being Human), Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All At Once), Chin Han (The Dark Knight), Daniel Wu (Westworld), Stephanie Hsu (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), and many other stars. Filming wrapped in July, and the project is set to release soon.
Based on the American Born Chinese comic, the adaptation features the coming-of-age story of Jin Wang. With Jin struggling to reconcile his cultural background with American society, he is completely listless. Yet, after befriending his fellow student Wei-Chen (Jim Liu), Jin is drawn into a complex mythological conflict that could see the whole of the world in danger.
As revealed in the teaser trailer, the project will be released on May 24 on Disney+. As yet, there has not been any information about how many episodes there will be, nor if there could be a second season. American Born Chinese is being run by the director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and promises to be massive in scope.
